Danish textile and furniture designer Sofie Brünner has designed the Blush chair.

Description from the designer:
BLUSH is a unique lounge chair that aims at stimulating the senses. Working from the concept of haptic design (design that stimulate the sense of touch), BLUSH has a contrasting and playful appearance that invites the user to explore the materials, construction and comfortability. The chair consists of a faceted hard aluminium shell in which a perforated pattern has been laser-cut. Using a brush binding technique, the holes are upholstered with strips of hand printed felt. This results in a soft and tactile front upholstery and a pixel-like upholstered back.
Overall BLUSH has a surprisingly austere expression that is softened by the blushing felt loops that flourish across the chair.

Watch the application to every available surface of brightly coloured stickers in the shape of dots. The artist Yayoi Kusama created a brilliantly white environment (a blank canvas) where over the course of two weeks children who visited were given thousands of coloured dot stickers and were invited to collaborate in the transformation of the space. Seems like apartments are shrinking with the economy and we're forced to cram all of our wonderful ideas in smaller and smaller spaces! Looking to keep your studio up-to-date with a modern taste? We've got a few tips to keep you living in style without living in a junkie-like space.

Essential Choices
You're working with limited space. When you go out hunting for new items, keep in mind that they should feel absolutely essential to the feel of the room you're trying to create. Don't splurge on simple ornaments, make the functional pieces of your apartment the ones that shout.

Vicious Editing
Once you've already gotten the pieces you want, you must become a heartless editor. Slash and throw away the pieces that are not needed. In such a small space, even the slightest excesses create a feel of clutter. You're looking to create a clean looking area. Studios look dirty quickly.

One. Single. Theme.
When you live in a multi room space, you can theme different rooms as much as you'd like. When you exist in a single space, though, it should flow with a single theme. Not that color variations and hues should not change, but that there should be no confusion of message in the design. Asian Zen theme? Go for it, but don't add a dash of Modern Euro into it.

Define Areas
To give yourself a sense of space, clearly define areas in your room. Despite it being a studio, there should be a distinct mentality of Bedroom, Reading Area, Kitchen, etc. If nothing else, you don't want new friends accidentally standing in your bedroom uninvited.

Use the Room
The space itself will come with its own opportunities and challenges. Use the space, utilize dividers to clearly state differences. Lighting, too, can be a way of identifying different areas in your space.

Most important to designing a studio is to believe that it is your space. We prefer studios to one bedroom apartments, the unification of the room represents a unification of life. No areas are seperated. Whatever you choose to do with your space, own it.

Finally, have fun with the decorating and as we always say 'things we surround ourselves with should possess a soul, a story, and a purpose beyond mere decoration'.

Inspired to create her abstract yet stunning menagerie after her grandmother’s needlepoint of a wild boar hunt was thrown out after she passed away, each one is made up of expertly sourced vintage tapestries. We loove how once wrapped around the artists fiberglass animal-shaped moulds, these old-fashioned textiles have a whole new life to them.

12-16 eggs for the shell (or an 8 inch pan if you want to bake a classic brownie)
7 oz bittersweet chocolate, chopped (200 g)
1 stick butter, room temperature (125 g)
3 large eggs
1 cup granulated sugar
1 pinch of salt
1 cup all-purpose flour
3 Tbls unsweetened cocoa powder

We Love Food As Much As Design - Spicy Pumpkin Soup

We fell in love and went on drooling when we saw this recipe by Tara Ballantyne. The temperatures here are cooling down getting ready for the lovely winter nights and so we thought why not go for a sweet spicy cup of pumpkin soup!!!

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons olive oil

240 g (1 cup) chopped onions

1 teaspoon minced garlic

1 tablespoon grated ginger

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons curry powder

1 L (4 cups) chicken or vegetable broth

425 g pumpkin puree (or 1 can pure pumpkin)

3.5 dl (1 1/2 cups) viking milk or cream

2 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon honey

salt and pepper to taste

Heat olive oil in a large soup pot over medium heat.

Add onions and garlic. Cook until onions begin to soften, about 3 minutes.

Stir in ginger root and cook for 30 more seconds.

Stir in curry and flour until smooth. Cook until mixture begins to bubble.

Gradually whisk in broth and cook until thickened. Stir in pumpkin and evaporated milk.

Season with soy sauce, honey, salt and pepper.

Bring to just a boil, and remove from heat.

Garnish with roasted pumpkin seeds and sour cream.

*makes 8 servings

A World of Yesterday's Tomorrows : By Nadine Spencer

Nadine Spencer’s illuminated city made up from nearly 800 laser-cut buildings captured our eye and attention! A World of Yesterday’s Tomorrows, is Nadine's final project while at Nottingham Trent University.

"The building shapes are all laser cut. I started with illustrations, put them through a computer process to make the laser-files, the cut them from mountboard that I had screen printed pigments onto. I had about 50 building templates overall and cut nearly 800 buildings to make the piece. The entire model breaks up into 7 segments and the wooden stand inside collapses so that I can transport it. So as you can imagine, it took real logistical thinking, engineering and a lot of maths to make which was a challenge, but came with immense gratification." Nadine Spencer

The reOrder Exhibit by Situ Studio

We can't get enough of this lovely installation in The Brooklyn Museum/New York.

The Brooklyn Museum is a lasting landmark in the New York area that brings more than 450,000 visitors annually to see its acclaimed artistic temporary exhibitions and permanent collections. The Great Hall of the museum, located on the first floor, is a 10,000 square foot room filled with 16 giant columns. The hall which is positioned between the café, museum book store and other creative exhibits, acts as a common area for museum visitors and personnel. It is also currently hosting an exhibit called, “reOrder,” until January 15 of 2012.

FoID feature at INDEX 2011, Dubai

'CUBOiD' to allow visitors to see and experience the talent and creativity of Middle East region's interior design professionalsAPID will be hosting a new and experimental feature area that will showcase the latest creative works, designs and trends of the region's talented pool of interior designers. This will take place during this year's edition of the INDEX International Design Exhibition 2011, which will be held from October 22 to October 25, 2011 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The unique feature is part of the region's first 'Festival of Interior Design' (FOiD), which will also be held from October 22 to 25, 2011 across Dubai.

The CUBOiD is a distinctive cube-shaped structure designed and conceptualized by a team of local designers and will offer visitors to experience sheer creativity within an interior setting. A look inside the CUBOiD will bring you on an inspiring journey to experience interior design in its purest form. Stretching out over an area of 174 sq meters, the CUBOiD will be composed of 5 key areas with an experimentation zone at the heart of the feature. The feature also includes a library housing contemporary books, magazines and published journals on interior design and related subjects; an information area for both APID and FOiD combined with key exhibition areas displaying the latest works from student designers and entries for FOiD's design competition; and a café and meeting lounge for APID members, INDEX visitors and participants to hold discussions and networking sessions.

Boxed in 'The National' !

We had the honour to be featured by Selina Denman in The National newspaper yesterday. The National is Abu Dhabi's best printed and online newspaper. Here's the printed version of the article! The same can be found in the digital copy here.

Our appreciation for good design is great and we strongly believe that design brings down all barriers between all nations of the world, but we think of food as the same. Therefore, we have dedicated a section of our blog to feature our favorite cooks and food bloggers of the world, to share with you this second love we have.

This month we are featuring Ms. Bethany Kehdy, a Lebanese-American food blogger, recipe developer, freelance food and travel writer, and food photographer. Ms. Kehdy is the founder of Taste Lebanon, leading culinary tours across Lebanon and Food Blogger Connect; Europe’s first and only conference and forum for food bloggers.

What’s special about this lovely lady; is the sense she has for bringing out the beauty and essence of the Middle Eastern cuisine and framing it in a very modern. We have picked a few of her dishes that left us drooling : )

An introduction about Boxed

Lots has been said at our website pages, so I’ll briefly say that we are the first website in the Middle East to take the lead in connecting Independent Designers with consumers.

During our long journey of establishing Boxed, we found out that the Middle East carries so little information and a stereotype image of what is an Independent Designer or Artisan. The image carries limited creativity, an under developed hobby and little modernism.. on the contrary this came out to be untrue!

We got in touch with many great designers that are self-employed, or part timers and they have shown us brilliance, professionalism, creativity and lots of modern designs!

I must add as well, that all our motivation behind this is from the vibes we get and positive energy we receive from our beloved designers and suppliers.

Thank you all and please welcome Boxed into this world..
