5 Tips for Interior Decorating Your Studio

Seems like apartments are shrinking with the economy and we're forced to cram all of our wonderful ideas in smaller and smaller spaces! Looking to keep your studio up-to-date with a modern taste? We've got a few tips to keep you living in style without living in a junkie-like space.

Essential Choices
You're working with limited space. When you go out hunting for new items, keep in mind that they should feel absolutely essential to the feel of the room you're trying to create.  Don't splurge on simple ornaments, make the functional pieces of your apartment the ones that shout.  

Vicious Editing
Once you've already gotten the pieces you want, you must become a heartless editor.  Slash and throw away the pieces that are not needed.  In such a small space, even the slightest excesses create a feel of clutter.  You're looking to create a clean looking area.  Studios look dirty quickly.

One. Single. Theme.
When you live in a multi room space, you can theme different rooms as much as you'd like.  When you exist in a single space, though, it should flow with a single theme.  Not that color variations and hues should not change, but that there should be no confusion of message in the design.  Asian Zen theme?  Go for it, but don't add a dash of Modern Euro into it.

Define Areas
To give yourself a sense of space, clearly define areas in your room.  Despite it being a studio, there should be a distinct mentality of Bedroom, Reading Area, Kitchen, etc.  If nothing else, you don't want new friends accidentally standing in your bedroom uninvited.

Use the Room
The space itself will come with its own opportunities and challenges. Use the space, utilize dividers to clearly state differences.  Lighting, too, can be a way of identifying different areas in your space.

Most important to designing a studio is to believe that it is your space. We  prefer studios to one bedroom apartments, the unification of the room represents a unification of life.  No areas are seperated.  Whatever you choose to do with your space, own it.

Finally, have fun with the decorating and as we always say 'things we surround ourselves with should possess a soul, a story, and a purpose beyond mere decoration'.

A delicasy for the lovely upcoming festive season!
Inspired by one of Boulud’s favorite candies, sugared grapefruit rind dipped in chocolate, this simple tart is delightful when paired unexpectedly with grapefruit soup. The citrus contrasts with the ganache-like chocolate filling, bringing out its rich, creamy flavor. Dollops of cinnamon-spiced whipped cream are an added touch. Boxed loves anything that is out of this world and HANDMADE! When we laid eyes on these life-size taxidermy-esque sculptures by artist Frédérique Morrel we had to share them with you!

Inspired to create her abstract yet stunning menagerie after her grandmother’s needlepoint of a wild boar hunt was thrown out after she passed away, each one is made up of expertly sourced vintage tapestries. We loove how once wrapped around the artists fiberglass animal-shaped moulds, these old-fashioned textiles have a whole new life to them.

We Love Food As Much As Design; Egg Shell Brownie!

Ingredients

• 12-16 eggs for the shell (or an 8 inch pan if you want to bake a classic brownie)
• 7 oz bittersweet chocolate, chopped (200 g)
• 1 stick butter, room temperature (125 g)
• 3 large eggs
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 1 pinch of salt
• 1 cup all-purpose flour
• 3 Tbls unsweetened cocoa powder

The official opening of Safaa Alset solo exhibition took place at Saks Fifth Avenue -Bahrain City Centre on 25th Oct. 2011.

The exhibition will continue at Saks until the 8th of November to  move next to the premises of Albareh Art Gallery for another two weeks, until the 24th of  November,2011.

We Love Food As Much As Design - Spicy Pumpkin Soup

We fell in love and went on drooling when we saw this recipe by Tara Ballantyne. The temperatures here are cooling down getting ready for the lovely winter nights and so we thought why not go for a sweet spicy cup of pumpkin soup!!!

 

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons olive oil

240 g (1 cup) chopped onions

1 teaspoon minced garlic

1 tablespoon grated ginger

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons curry powder

1 L (4 cups) chicken or vegetable broth

425 g pumpkin puree (or 1 can pure pumpkin)

3.5 dl (1 1/2 cups) viking milk or cream

2 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon honey

salt and pepper to taste

Heat olive oil in a large soup pot over medium heat.

Add onions and garlic. Cook until onions begin to soften, about 3 minutes.

Stir in ginger root and cook for 30 more seconds.

Stir in curry and flour until smooth. Cook until mixture begins to bubble.

Gradually whisk in broth and cook until thickened. Stir in pumpkin and evaporated milk.

Season with soy sauce, honey, salt and pepper.

Bring to just a boil, and remove from heat.

Garnish with roasted pumpkin seeds and sour cream.

*makes 8 servings

A World of Yesterday's Tomorrows : By Nadine Spencer

Nadine Spencer’s illuminated city made up from nearly 800 laser-cut buildings captured our eye and attention! A World of Yesterday’s Tomorrows, is Nadine's final project while at Nottingham Trent University.

"The building shapes are all laser cut. I started with illustrations, put them through a computer process to make the laser-files, the cut them from mountboard that I had screen printed pigments onto. I had about 50 building templates overall and cut nearly 800 buildings to make the piece. The entire model breaks up into 7 segments and the wooden stand inside collapses so that I can transport it. So as you can imagine, it took real logistical thinking, engineering and a lot of maths to make which was a challenge, but came with immense gratification." Nadine Spencer
